Topics Covered in This Course:
Section 1
Science Skills
Overview: This topic will teach you that natural sciences form the basis for the applied sciences. Together, the natural and applied sciences are distinguished from the social sciences on the one hand, and the liberal arts (humanities, theology, etc.) on the other.
Properties of Matter
Overview: This topic will teach you that anything which occupies space and has mass is known as matter. In physics, there is no broad consensus as to an exact definition of matter. Physicists generally do not use the saying when precision is needed, preferring instead to speak of the more clearly defined concepts of mass, energy, and particles.
States of Matter
Overview: This topic will teach you that anything which occupies space and has mass is known as matter. In physics, there is no broad consensus as to an exact definition of matter.
Atomic Structure
Overview: This topic will teach you that anything which occupies space and has mass is known as matter. In physics, there is no broad consensus as to an exact definition of matter.
Section 2
The Periodic Table
Overview: This topic will teach you that the periodic table of the chemical elements is a tabular method of displaying the chemical elements. Although precursors to this table exist, its invention is generally credited to Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869. Mendeleev intended the table to illustrate recurring ("periodic") trends in the properties of the elements
Chemical Bonds
Overview: This topic will teach you that a chemical bond is the physical process responsible for the attractive interactions between atoms and molecules, and that which confers stability to diatomic and polyatomic chemical compounds. The explanation of the attractive forces is a complex area that is described by the laws of quantum electrodynamics
Chemical Reactions
Overview: This topic will teach you that different chemical reactions are used in combinations in chemical synthesis in order to get a desired product. In biochemistry, series of chemical reactions catalyzed by enzymes form metabolic pathways, by which syntheses and decompositions ordinarily impossible in conditions within a cell are performed.
Solutions, Acids, and Bases
Overview: This topic will teach you that a solution is a homogeneous mixture composed of two or more substances. In such a mixture, a solute is dissolved in another substance, known as a solvent.
Section 3
Carbon Chemistry
Overview: This topic will teach you that carbon is a chemical element in the periodic table that has the symbol C and atomic number 6. An abundant nonmetallic, tetravalent element, carbon has several allotropic forms.
Nuclear Chemistry
Overview: This topic will teach you that nuclear chemistry is a subfield of chemistry dealing with radioactivity, nuclear processes and nuclear properties.
Motion
Overview: This topic will teach you that motion means a continuous change in the location of a body. Change in motion is the result of applied force. Motion is typically described in terms of velocity, acceleration, displacement, and time.
Forces and Motion
Overview: This topic will teach you that a force is a push or pull that can cause an object with mass to accelerate. Force has both magnitude and direction, making it a vector quantity.
Section 4
Forces in Fluids
Overview: This topic will teach you that due to the inability to resist deformation, fluids exert pressure normal to any contacting surface. In addition, when the fluid is at rest that pressure is isotropic, i.e. it acts with equal magnitude in all directions.
Work, Power and Machines
Overview: This topic will teach you that the scientific definition of a "machine" is any device that is not a computer that transmits or modifies energy.
Energy
Overview: This topic will teach you that several different forms of energy, including kinetic, potential, thermal, gravitational, sound energy, light energy, elastic, electromagnetic, chemical, nuclear, and mass have been defined to explain all known natural phenomena.
Thermal Energy and Heat
Overview: This topic will teach you that the thermal energy is the energy portion of a system that increases with its temperature. In a loose sense, "thermal energy" is a term used to describe the energy content of a system related to heating effects, e.g. temperature increase or decrease
Section 5
Mechanical Waves and Sound
Overview: This topic will teach you that a mechanical wave requires a medium. Sound waves, waves in a Slinky, and pressure waves are all examples of this term. Sound waves need air molecules in order to exist; the Slinky waves need the Slinky, and the waves in the ocean need the water.
The Electro magnetic spectrum and Light
Overview: This topic will teach you that the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum is the range of all possible electromagnetic radiation. The "electromagnetic spectrum" (usually just spectrum) of an object is the characteristic distribution of electromagnetic radiation from that particular object.
Optics
Overview: This topic will teach you that optics appearance or look describes the behavior and properties of light and the interaction of light with matter. Optics explains optical phenomena.
Electricity
Overview: This topic will teach you that electricity is a general term that encompasses a variety of phenomena resulting from the presence and flow of electric charge. These include many easily recognizable phenomena such as lightning and static electricity, but in addition, less familiar concepts such as the electromagnetic field and electromagnetic induction.
Magnetism
Overview: This topic will teach you that magnetism is one of the phenomena by which materials exert attractive or repulsive forces on other materials. Some well-known materials that exhibit easily detectable magnetic properties (called magnets) are nickel, iron, cobalt, and their alloys.
